The 1820 federal census reports that Joseph Metzgar of Somerset County, Quemahoming Township, Pa., had in his household one son between the ages of 10 and 16 and two daughters between the ages of 16 and 26. This correlates to John and Elisabeth Metzgar's ages. It is assumed that Elisabeth Metzgar, shown in the 1850 census living in John Metzgar's household, is nine years old than John and is not his wife, but is his older sister. Could this be Jonas ?

The October 1850 federal census spells John Metzgar's surname with an "ar" ending.

There appears to be three John Metzger's and a John Metzgar in Somerset County in the early twenties. The Metzgers operated a tavern along the Bedford-Pittsburgh road and had a son who spelled his name with an "er" ending. A John Metzgar was an investor in the Somerset and Bedford Turnpike Company and was on the Board of Managers of the Somerset and Bedford Turnpike Company when it was formed on Feb. 3,1818. In 1841, a group from a Lutheran congregation of people from near Mann's Choice and German Reformed church members erected a stone church on John Metzger's land. George's father John was born in 1810.

Per the 1800 census, there is a John Metzgar (age 26-45) living in Bedford county, Hopewell-Woodberry Twp. In 1807, John Metzger filed a will in Bedford County ( vol.1-page 241). The towns of Hopewell and Woodberry are in present Bedford County, north of Everett, near the Cambria and Huntingdon county lines.

Milton George was 71 when he was fatally injured when hit by a car. He was crushed between the rear end of his own car, on which he was repairing a flat tire, and the front end of the automobile driven by Glenn Hunter, 25, of Friedens, R.D.2. His injuries consisted of a fracture of the skull, fractures of several ribs on the right side and a compound fracture of the right leg. The Metzger car was reported to have been three feet off the highway at the time of the fatality. His was laid out in his house and moved for burial to Grandview Cemetery.

Milton was a lifelong member of the Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren, where he had been deacon for 40 years and church treasurer for the last six years, serving in the latter capacity at the time of his death.

Zella enjoyed oil painting, flowers, plants, and garden. She was a devout Christian.

A letter dated May 1, 1961 was sent by Zella to her sister, Betty Baker (Grace Elizabeth Metzger). Betty says that this was the last letter she received from Zella before Zella died. Betty has the original letter. (Ken and Barbara Link have a photocopy.)

Zella writes about attending Aunt Julia's funeral and seeing many relatives. Also, she writes that she will not participate in any more flower shows (one had just ended) because they are "so much work and opposition, it isn't worth it." That night she is to attend a mother-daughter banquet and writes that she "will be glad when it is over." She continues, "I was coaxed into singing in a quartette with 3 other fatties. The song is a Joke (sic) about getting thin. A Joke it will be I'm sure."

Zella reports on her grandchildren's progress. Kenny, eight months old, weighs 18.5 pounds, is creeping, but has no teeth yet. She compares her children's (Ken and Phyllis) weight (19 pounds) at a year old, "but they were both considered under weight according to weight charts." Finally, Zella writes about finishing her domestic chores and finding the time to paint her kitchen. She admonishes her sister, Betty, to "calm down your activities a little and learn to relax (;) that is what my ambition is."
